MonoRover R2D Test & Review

As soon as you pull it out of the box, you can see that the MonoRover R2D is sleek and beautifully designed, like something you’d see out of a futuristic movie. The new model features sharper body lines, an upgraded rubber grip pad, and a modernized LED display. The MonoRover R2D’s new wheels have a razor-edged minimalist design, and following suit with their other models, the MonoRover logo is prominently displayed in the center of each wheel. We put this self-balancing scooter on the charger right away and waited anxiously for it to charge.

Because of all the power improvements over the previous MonoRover R2, the MonoRover R2D requires a slightly longer charge time of about 30 minutes. Ours took roughly an hour and 45 minutes to reach a full charge. But remember, that extra half hour of charge time allows for an extra 2-4 miles of ride time, so the wait is definitely worth it. Plus, an hour and 45 minutes is still a shorter charge time than 75% of other hoverboards when you really think about it.

The first noticeable difference we felt right away was the speed. The max speed of the new MonoRover R2D is 9.5 mph as opposed to the previous model’s 8 mph, and you’d truly be surprised how much of an impact that little upgrade makes. We still have an old MonoRover R2 at the office, and when we put the two models in a side-by-side race, the MonoRover R2D pulled away effortlessly. The faster speed and 10° increase in climbing power also makes it much easier to ride up hills, and it consistently holds its speed the entire time it’s climbing. After a full day of hoverboard riding, we were able to ride an impressive 13.5 miles before this self-balancing scooter needed to be recharged.

In addition to the power upgrades, the MonoRover R2D features an upgraded 6th generation gyro chip and foot pad sensors, which improves both stability and handling. This helps the hoverboard feel more solid and tough when you’re forced to ride through rougher terrain like dirt and bumpy roads. We actually noticed that we fell less testing this model than the old MonoRover R2, and we think that was directly related to the upgraded stability. This is rather impressive too when you consider that the brand was actually able to shave off 2 lbs of weight with this new model, so the fact that the MonoRover R2D is lighter and more stable is a pretty big deal.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Gorgeous, futuristic design built with high-quality parts
  • One of the fastest and lightest hoverboards on the market as of today
  • 6th generation gyro technology provides an impressively solid, stable, and smooth ride
  • Long-lasting battery allows for nearly 14 miles of ride time on a single charge

Cons

  • Although durable, still scratches somewhat easily due to plastic body
  • Still no Bluetooth speakers available
  • $599 price is on the higher end of the cost spectrum

Overall, the MonoRover R2D is undoubtedly one of the best hoverboards we’ve ridden to this day. While the price is slightly higher than other hoverboards, the MonoRover R2D is worth every penny and we highly recommend it. Thank to its high-quality build, this board is sure to last you a long time and provide you a lot of fun. It outperforms nearly all other self balancing scooters and is an absolute blast to ride. As MonoRover themselves say, “There is a new King in town.”
